Cost of a chimpanzee habituation permit in Uganda

Experiencing chimpanzees in their natural habitat is one of the most thrilling and memorable experiences in the world. Chimpanzee habituation happens in Uganda’s Kibale Forest National Park, located in the western part of the country, in Kamwenge and Kabarole district stretching approximately 756 square kilometers. It is home to the highest population of primate species having 13 types. There are several tree species, birds, and mammals present, although they are rare to see. Chimpanzees have been scientifically proven to share up to 98% of human DNA, characterized by their social behavior, ability to use tools, and other social aspects. The forest is managed under the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Chimpanzee habituation refers to the process of getting the chimpanzee used to the presence of humans. It takes a period of 2-3 years for the primates to get used to people being around them. During the process, visitors have a chance to interact, learn, take pictures, and also enjoy the views of the forest while the chimps jump from tree to tree. The activity begins at the Kanyanchu visitor center with a briefing from the Uganda Wildlife Authority guide at 6:30 am, it takes 4 hours with the primates however this can be an all-day experience, the minimum number of chimpanzee habituation is 4 people per day during the trek there are high chances of meeting other primate species for example the black and white colobus monkeys, grey checked mangabey, red colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, L’hoest monkeys to mention a few.

The cost of a chimpanzee permit in Uganda is determined by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). This year, the permit costs $300 foreign nonresidents, $250 foreign residents, and 200,000 shillings for East African citizens. The funds collected from the permits are used to support local communities, projects, and rangers. Although the permit is priced at this amount, prices tend to change annually; in 2027, the cost of chimpanzee habituation permits shall be $400 foreign nonresidents and $300 for foreign residents.

Besides the chimpanzee habituation in Kibale Forest National Park, there are several other activities, for example the chimpanzee tracking, this is the normal tracking that most visitors go for, it is done in sessions beginning at 8:00 am or 2:00 pm East African time, the tracking lasts for 2-3 hours depending on how far the primates have moved, upon finding these an hour is allowed while with them and later return to meet your guide,. The chimpanzee permit costs less compared to the chimpanzee habituation permit. This year, the permit is at $250 per person for foreign non-residents, $200 foreign residents, and 180,000 shillings for East African Citizens. Effective January 2027, the price of chimpanzee trekking permits shall be $300 for foreign nonresidents and $250 for foreign residents.

The Bigodi Swamp walk takes place in the Bigodi Sanctuary, situated a few meters outside the park, which is home to over 200 species of birds, notable for the great blue turaco. During the walk, expect to meet a few primate species, for example, the olive baboons, blue monkeys, grey-checked mangabey, and several butterfly species.

Kibale Forest National Park is a great spot to go birding in Uganda, it hosts over 300 species of birds including forest birds, savannah birds and swamp birds, example species include the African green pigeon, great blue turaco, African fish eagle, Malachite king Fisher, grey crowned cranes, red throated bee eater, owl faced barbet, Pia piac to mention a few.

Kibale Forest National Park can be accessed by road or by air. It takes approximately 6 hours by road to the destination through the angelic rolling hills, banana and tea plantations, by flight it takes an hour to the Kasese Airstrip, and thereafter a ground transfer of about 60-75 minutes to Kibale Tourist Safari Lodge.
